BU2MU – “I am smiling, I think of you”

“And nothing can compare, to when you roll the dice and swear your love’s for me”

Loving someone requires a certain amount of faith, there are no guarantees. There is always a risk, always a gamble involved when you choose to love someone completely – but when you both decide that the reward and journey of trying to love each other outweighs the risk of it not working, when you both decide to roll the dice, to go all in…well, ain’t that a beautiful thing? Finlay Quaye is right, nothing can compare.

for heaven’s sake, don’t make me explain

And anyone that you have done
Has gotta be alright with me
If she’s part of
The reason you are how you are
She’s alright with me”

That’s a good way to look at it.

Fiona, I will never stop loving you. You lot, read this. It’s great.

BU2MU Mixtapes

I’ve been wanting to make these BU2MU mixtapes for ages, but being that I’m not a DJ, and that I’ve been procrastinating asking the DJ’s I do know to mix the tape for me, they never eventuated. I’ve had the list of songs sitting in a Word document for months, I’ve played around with their order, trying to have the songs flow, as well as have a narrative, but until now they’ve just been a typed up, metaphorical mixtape. Then Spotify came to NZ, and I got to drag and drop my mixtape in about 2 mins flat. Technology ay. So, please enjoy these two BU2MU mixtapes, though it took just seconds to assemble, I actually spent a lot of time agonizing over which songs to include and the order, etc. Shouts to David & Jordache for their stellar suggestions as always.

You do need spotify going to listen, but if you don’t have it already just download it here, sign in with your facebook account, and subscribe to the mixtapes, or just play it off here. Easy as.

Ladies, sway to this

Fellas, drank to this

monkey lines are now in season

Do you remember the game you tried to pull the first time you met your significant other? Were you pretty smooth? Or, when you look back at some of the lines you ran, and the things you did to get their attention, do you cringe just a little bit? Whether cheesy or blush-worthy, it obviously didn’t matter, cos’ you ended up snagging them anyway, right? That’s what I love about TLC’s Diggin On You – they’re dissing and falling for the guy in the same breath. There’s something about that person you’re with, that despite whatever silliness they pulled, you fell for them anyway. And they fell for you too. Hopefully you’re still diggin, diggin, diggin, diggin on each other 🙂

P.S When are baggy pants/tracks and crop tops coming back in? I’ll be all over that shit if someone wants to pop it off for me.

I’m doing the norm, and not what it takes…

I can’t find the words, so you’ll just fill in the blanks
I’m doing the norm and not what it takes
I’ll keep folding my cards and you’ll keep raising the stakes
‘Til we forget about us and what we have is too late

It’s Monday already, and I think I’m still recovering from Friday. It’s all about that YOLO lifestyle until you die a thousand times the next day. So, apart from dancing up a storm to Ginuwine’s Pony and losing my wallet, I’ve been listening to Big K.R.I.T’s 4Eva N A Day on repeat, and pushing the replay button more often than not on this ‘Red Eye’ track. It’s the struggle of knowing something is missing in your relationship, and knowing you need to do more to make it work – but for whatever reason, you just can’t put in what’s required. The love is there, but you question if it’s enough. You can’t give them your all, but you don’t want to let them go.  Maybe it’s because in the back of your mind, you know the other person already has one foot out the door. Maybe you do too.

When he ends the song with ‘I ain’t the man you want me to be, I guess that’s what’s been bothering me’ – Dagger. to. the. heart.

Actin’ up, drank in my cup, I could care less what you think…

“You had your turn, now you gon’ learn, what it really feels like to miss me…”

No one needs to be told how great this song is, you already know. Beyonce’s ‘Single Ladies’ is the perfect, fun, triumphant break up song that never comes across as bitter, it just has that kind of…’um, seriously?’ attitude. I imagine Bey was like, dude, your behaviour is so laughably ridiculous right now I’m just gonna pull on my lil leotard right here and break this f***ery down for you. a) you cheated on me b) I cried for 3 years over that ish c) you see me happy with someone else and NOW you wanna act like you want me? Pssh please. Lemme just do this buzzy dance right here and smack my bum a bit and go, WHOA, OH, OH, WHOA, OH OH OH, OH in your face. Oh, that’s not helping you want me any less is it? Damn g, shoulda put a ring on it when you had the chance.

love was out of my control.

The walls of this hotel are paper-thin
Last night I heard you making love to him
The struggle mouth to mouth and limb to limb
The grunt of unity when he came in
I stood there with my ear against the wall
I was not seized by jealousy at all
In fact a burden lifted from my soul
I heard that love was out of my control
A heavy burden lifted from my soul
I heard that love was out of my control

– Leonard Cohen, Paper Thin Hotel.

I’ve had this sitting in my drafts for months and months now, I love Leonard Cohen, I read his poetry and lyrics all the time, I’d say I read more of his songs than I ever listen to them, but I don’t like to attempt to analyse his words.

‘Paper Thin Hotel’ though has one of my favourite lines from Mr Cohen, lines that came in handy in a particularly difficult time in my life. ‘A heavy burden lifted from my soul, I heard that love was out of my control.’ During that time, I remembered the song, and would repeat the lines to myself in my head. That’s not to say we have no control at all, because we do, we have control over our own feelings and our own actions and reactions. But, unless it’s unrequited, love involves another person. And that other person and their actions, you cannot control. Love is, in many ways, an exercise in faith. You are putting your faith in another person to not abuse or betray that. Often we are disappointed, often we are betrayed. How you react AFTER that, is up to you, you control where you go from there. But whether it’s overhearing your love with someone else through the wall of a paper-thin hotel, or simply being taken for granted – that’s not on you, and that’s not your burden to carry.

Lips – Everything To Me

“Everything To Me” by Lips has been out since June but I only stumbled across it yesterday via Bic Runga’s twitter. The song is lovely, but with a touch of sadness, lamenting how life’s daily grind can sometimes grind down the soul. I really like it, I’m sure you will too:

You can fight but you won’t always win
Somehow life finds a way to beat you
But I’ll come join you in the ring
Guess it shows just how much i need you.

bigger than your pride’s worth

I feel like the lyrics to this song are so very intimate, it would be bad form to put my own spin on them. The line that sticks with me though, and one that I think is very powerful; ‘someone to love is bigger than your pride’s worth.’

someone to love is bigger than your pride’s worth
it’s bigger than the pain you got for it hurts,
and out runs all of the sadness
it’s terrifying life through the darkness
And I’d do it all again, I’d do it all again. I’d do it all again.

loneliness leaves no shadow

Love ends in a fire. It would not be love if you did not feel the burn at the end of it. Even when trying to graciously part ways – ‘don’t say your goodbyes, say after me, I wish you well my baby’, these sentiments can quickly turn to ‘I’ll burn you down, before you go and break me.’ Because it hurts. It stings. It is not pleasant. And self preservation kicks in as soon as you realise it’s done. It’s ugly no matter how well you dress it up. Love is often likened to fire, Bic Runga says it ends in a fire. No goodbyes, just two people going their own way.

It’s a crying shame
To have only hopeless sorrow
To have no more days to borrow
The distance will grow

She did an acoustic version of the song at the 2006 NZ Music awards. It’s one of the best live performances I’ve ever seen.
