Talia’s treats: Strawberry ricotta tart

Talia says “This ones yummy and so far everyone I’ve tried it on thinks its really good and very moreish … “. I thiiink, but am not sure (google has been of no help) that strawberry season is pretty much over, so, get in quick to make this!! Or, just substitute with your fave fruit or berries. Chur.

For the base:
1 cup flour
1 cup ground almonds
1 cup raw sugar
1/2 tsp baking powder
100g butter
1 tbsp lemon zest
juice of one lemon

Mix the dry ingredients together, then add butter and beat till mixture resembles breadcrumbs.  Add zest and lemon juice and mix till forms a soft dough. Press into a lined tray, chill in fridge for 30mins. Bake 15-20mins at 180C or until golden brown. Let cool completely.

For topping:
250g ricotta cheese
2-3 tbsp icing sugar
1 tsp vanilla bean paste

Beat till smooth. Spread over tart base. Place sliced strawberries over top. Cut and eat…

chillin’ with no make-up on

Who else feels so much better about not wearing any make up in summer?

I think it’s the lovely light that the warmer weather brings and the extra happiness that sunshine can give you, it does something to your skin and your mood and the way you feel about yourself, right? Or, maybe that’s just me.

music mondays : losing you x make it hot x treat me like fire

This year has been pretty struggletastic for me so far, I just can’t seem to get into the swing of things. What I have been getting into the swing of so hard though is this ‘Solange – Losing You’ song. The song, the video, the fashion, it’s all round brilliant, innit? It’s also been the song that keeps giving because, as a kind of flow on effect of this discovery, I’ve re-discovered an old favourite and been reminded of a very cool new artist and song.

Ye Old favourite: Going through the youtube searches of ‘Solange’ will bring you to this cover of ‘Make It Hot’ she did with Oliver from the XX which is nice, but it’s really all about the original : Nicole Wray feat. Missy Elliott & Mocha – Make It Hot. It’s also all about the wide brimmed bucket hats pulled down low. I need me one. (peep the Aaliyah cameo too)

The new discovery: I think it was from deidah last year that I first heard LION BABE’s – Treat Me Like Fire. When I clicked on the video and the first thing I saw was some chick roaring at me I thought, ‘oh geez, what is this shit?’ But then the song began, and I thought, wow this is great. And then I forgot all about it. Lucky for me, Solange reminded me of it again on her twitter. Just give it a listen, she’s sexy as and has a voice like Erykah Badu. You’re welcome.

Bloom Cupcakes & peach ice tea

If you’re the type that likes indulging in edible treats of the pretty and sweet variety, I’d suggest making the trip out to Birkenhead to enjoy some of the many delicious cupcakes on offer at Bloom Cupcakes. As with most things cute featured on this blog, it was my friend Shirl who introduced me to the Bloom goodness when she bought over a selection of cupcakes including the Mini macarons on top of chocolate ganache, and banana blast – with cream cheese frosting topped with fudge crumble, banana chip and sprinkles. I was sold. For the full experience though, you need to venture to the adorable shop, where the cakes tower on plexi-glass shelving. There, you’re given the option of hot tea to perfectly match your chosen flavour, or peach ice tea – which is beautifully displayed in a large glass jar filled with ice, freshly brewed peach tea and peach syrup. Most days, they post up the flavours that are available on their facebook page – (today includes creamy custard & cherry blossom, fyi) so keep an eye on them there, and when a flavour that tickles your fancy pops up – I suggest you do something about it.

ready to suffer, ready to hope : a few songs to make you smile

Screen shot 2013-01-16 at 12.46.01 PM

smiling is good.

My personality seems to always naturally lean towards the cynical, negative, sarcastic. It’s a cop out, because it’s easy to feel like that. I wanted to counter that by sharing some nice, uplifting, lovely and cheerful songs. Florence & The Machine’s – Shake It Out, is actually pretty dark but the sentiment, and overall feeling is one of hope, overcoming and letting go.

John Legend’s ‘Save Room’ is beautiful and soothing, The Shapeshifters – ‘Lola’s Theme’ is fun and triumphant (shot Shirl) and I thought I’d throw in Luther Vandross – ‘Never Too Much’ for good measure.

bits & pieces – the long holiday

I feel like this is the longest I’ve ever been on holiday-mode. I haven’t been doing too much other than sleeping in and eating lots of good food. But, amongst the haze of laziness there have been plenty of highlights, including what I had declared the best day of the year for me. It started out with a very cool photoshoot for boohoo, which I can’t say too much about just yet, but I can’t wait to share it with y’all. It ended ballin’ out of control at the Heinken Open with the boyfriend watching three matches of tennis, drinking strawberry daiquiris, cider and eating lots of treats.

Last week I took a trip down memory lane to see Weezer at Vector Arena. I have to admit, I’m more a radio singles fan, rather than a hardcore fan like my friend ShirlyShirl. It didn’t matter though, because the first half of their show consisted of their greatest hits, which included one of my faves ‘El Scorcho’, at which point I lost my shit. It was the first time I’d been to a show where there was an intermission, and during this there was a slide show of old pictures of the band, gig posters and a commentary on their history and how they got together and lots of other cool info, it was def one of the highlights of the show. Then came the part that all had been waiting for – The Blue Album – which of course produced epic sing-alongs to ‘Say It Ain’t So’, ‘Buddy Holly’ and ‘Undone – the Sweater Song.’

Apart from that it’s been a mish mash of spontaneous karaoke nights filled with Backstreet Boys, Five and Blue, eating and drinking at Japanese restaurants til they close, junk-food binges, days at the beach and festie shows. Isn’t life 100 % better when it’s warm and sunny?

miss crabb dress x lonely lingerie x omaha

The lingerie came first, and then the dress. I’d had my eye on the ‘Lonely’ cutout triangle longline bra, and matching high waist brief for some time and thanks to my first tax return in years, they became mine. While I was paying for the set, I joked that now all I needed was something to show off the bra, and it was suggested that Miss Crabb had the perfect dresses to do just that. I’ve worn this ‘Summertime’ dress so much already, day or night, it is, as the name suggests, the perfect summer dress.I snapped these pics just before spending hours diving over and under waves at Omaha beach. Beauty day, beauty beach.
